John Brynjolfsson, CFA
Managing Director

 

Mr. Brynjolfsson oversees all investment activity at Armored Wolf, LLC. He is an expert in the area of managing alternative real assets; and his experience includes commodities, global inflation-linked bonds, event-linked catastrophe bonds, asset allocation and risk management.

 

A popular and provocative communicator, Mr. Brynjolfsson is a frequent guest on CNBC, Bloomberg TV and PBS’s Wealth Track; has been quoted in The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal and featured in Fortune; is a member of industry advisory committees; and has testified before the House Financial Services Committee as an expert on catastrophic risk transfer.

 

Mr. Brynjolfsson is co-author of Inflation-Protection Bonds and co-editor of The Handbook of Inflation-Indexed Bonds. He has 19 years of investment experience and holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from Columbia College and a master’s degree in finance and economics from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

During Mr. Brynjolfsson’s 19-year tenure at PIMCO, he launched and grew the Real Return platform from $0 to $80 billion in third-party assets, including launching and managing PIMCO’s second, third, and fourth largest public funds. He provided leadership for asset allocation, risk management and consulting functions.

Tim Alford
Managing Director

Tim AlfordMr. Alford is Armored Wolf's Head Trader and a member of the Investment Committee. As a member of the Investment Committee he is one of three

investment professionals  responsible for generating the firm’s macro views, implementing the directional macro overlay and allocating capital to the individual sectors. In his role as Head Trader, Mr. Alford focuses on emerging market currencies and investment idea implementation across each of the sectors.

 

Prior to joining Armored Wolf, Mr. Alford was Head Trader, Portfolio Manager, and one of 3 members of the Investment Committee with Clarium Capital Management, a global macro hedge fund that grew from $2 billion to $5 billion during his tenure.

Alan Andreini
Managing Director

Alan AndreiniMr. Andreini is responsible for day-to-day management of the firm. He is a 35 year industry veteran with over 21 years in the hedge fund space. Mr. Andreini comes to Armored Wolf from Money Management Group, LP, where as a General Partner, he transitioned a small hedge fund with $41MM under management into an institutional global asset management firm.
Mr. Andreini holds a B.A. from Princeton University and a J.D. from Rutgers University Law School.


PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

  • Raised $1.7 billion for Money Management Group’s global macro hedge fund while orchestrating build out of infrastructure to support asset growth.

  • As CEO, took InterWorld public in 1999 and achieved a market capitalization of $2.9 billion in two years.

  • Raised $20 billion in financing for Comdisco where he rose to Executive Vice President and became a member of the Office of the President and Board of Directors.

  • Completed the first asset-backed bond deal secured by leases and played a leading role in developing the asset-backed securities market.

Ronald Solberg, Ph.D.

Ron Solberg

Dr. Solberg is a member of the Investment Committee and is responsible for overseeing all emerging market investment activity.
He is a veteran money manager with 30 years of experience in a wide range of asset classes across emerging markets, including equities, fixed income, currencies and derivatives.
He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and a B.A. with Distinction from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

  • Managing Director and Market Strategist at Tokyo Mitsubishi International in London and Chase Securities in Hong Kong.
  •  Head of emerging market research at PIMCO.
  • Managed risks of cross border lending to developed and emerging market countries and companies while working at Security Pacific Bank, NA and Wells Fargo Bank, NA from the late 1970s through the early 1990s.
  • Author and co-author of multiple books and articles on risk analysis, portfolio management and emerging markets including: Country Risk Analysis: A Handbook; Sovereign Rescheduling: Risk and Portfolio Management (published PhD thesis); The Soviet Union’s Hard Currency Balance of Payments and Creditworthiness in 1985; and Efficient Allocation of an Emerging Market Bond Portfolio


 

Erik Carlson, Ph.D., CFA

Erik Carlson

Dr. Carlson is responsible for Quantitative Research for Armored Wolf. He is an 18 year veteran of the securities and investment management industry. In his role he utilizes a unique skill set that spans both advanced market and technology expertise. Dr. Carlson
has experience developing sophisticated analytics for the most advanced groups within firms such as Morgan Stanley, Tiger Management, Prudential Securities, Lehman Brothers and Thinking Machines.

 

He holds a doctorate, master’s degree and two bachelor’s degrees from Carnegie Mellon University.

 

PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:

 

  • Founder of Beacon Capital Strategies Inc. an anonymous electronic system for trading asset backed securities. Managed a 12 member software development group for Urban Fetch.
  • As a Principal at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, developed a successful automated market making system for low latency equity option trading on the International Stock Exchange.
  • At Tiger Management he headed Investment Analytics and Quantitative Research overseeing an 11 member group.

Mohan Phansalkar, Esq.
Managing Director

 

Mohan PhansalkarMr.  Phansalkar is responsible for legal and compliance. Previously he was a Managing Director and Chief Legal Officer of PIMCO, where he oversaw in house and outside attorneys; ensured regulatory conformity and avoidance of legal problems; advised senior management; handled wide variety of other corporate legal issues; and supervised all aspects of the compliance department. Prior to that he was Associate General Counsel for Trust Company of the West, and an Associate at Sullivan & Cromwell where he successfully represented a diverse clientele in a vast array of corporate matters.

  • Managed all corporate legal affairs and $20+ million legal/compliance budget

  • Supervised 11 in-house lawyers, 90 legal and compliance support staff, and hiring of outside counsel

Bruce Goodwin
Director

Bruce GoodwinMr. Goodwin is an emerging markets portfolio manager and has expertise in the area of emerging market fixed income. 
Following his early career with S.G. Warburg & Co., he joined Chemical Bank in 1995 in the midst of the Tequila Crisis to pursue a role in Emerging Markets which continued following the merger with Chase Manhattan  in 1996.
In 1999 he joined Hydra Capital Management as a Portfolio Manager specializing in Emerging Market distressed debt situations.
From 2001 to 2007 he occupied Proprietary trading roles in Emerging Market debt at Credit Suisse and INTL Assets.

  • Head of Trading and a member of the Investment Committee at Monte Cristo Capital, an Emerging Markets manager based in London.

 

 

 

Brian Newton
Managing Director

 

Brian NewtonMr. Newton  is responsible for risk management across the firm. He comes to Armored Wolf from Pareto Investment Management where he served for over 13 years. For nearly a decade he was Head of Risk Management and a member of the Counterparty Credit and Legal Affairs Committees. He has also been Chief Compliance Officer since the requirement was established by the SEC.

Before joining Pareto, Mr. Newton served as a Director with BARRA where he managed their fixed income research prior to being their senior representative at BARRA’s joint venture in Tokyo. On returning to the US he led a team that developed the software infrastructure and analytics for fixed income portfolios and interest rate / swap books. He has more than 22 years experience in the financial services industry.

Mr. Newton is a summa cum laude graduate from Northern Arizona University with a BS in Mathematics and was enrolled in the Ph.D. program at U.C. Berkley from 1979 through 1982. He completed the qualifying examinations in Industrial Organization and International Economics along with courses in econometrics.

PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:

 

  • Established a scalable risk management system that reduced errors and costs and received positive assessments from external auditors and, more recently, the internal audit department of the parent bank.
  • Led a team that transformed the delivery of the currency risk management strategy from a spreadsheet implementation to a maintainable system of code and supporting databases which substantively reduced operational risk.
  • Successfully led research and development of BARRA’S Japanese bond model along with the creation of a global bond model for valuation and risk analysis that was designed for institutional investors.

 


Melissa Carnathan
Managing Director

 

Melissa Carnathan

Ms. Carnathan is responsible for global business development and investor relations.  She joins Armored Wolf from Merrill Lynch where she was Head of Capital Introductions for EMEA.

 

Ms. Carnathan has spent the past seven years at Merrill Lynch and UBS providing strategic marketing advice and investor introductions to a wide variety of hedge funds clients across the globe. In these roles, she worked extensively with global investors in hedge funds and she and her teams served as an important link between the investor and hedge fund communities Ms. Carnathan started her career in fixed income and has 15 years experience in the financial services sector.

 

Ms. Carnathan received her MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France, and holds a BA from the University of California at Berkeley.

  • Managing Director and Head of European Capital Introductions at Merrill Lynch International in London
  • Co-Head of European Capital Introductions at UBS; responsible for developing the Capital Introductions offering and team from its infancy

Harish Sundaresh
Director

 

Harish Sundaresh

Mr. Sundaresh is an Investment Analyst reporting directly to the CIO, John Brynjolfsson. His primary responsibility is to assist in trade idea generation and portfolio construction efforts relating to the Commodities portfolio. He also supports Mr.Brynjolfsson in the Global Inflation-Linked Bond and CAT Bond portfolios and aids in Quantitative Research and Risk Management areas of the firm.
He holds a masters degree in Computation for Design and Optimization (Applied Mathematics) from MIT and a bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from Anna University, India.

PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • As a Quantitative Portfolio Analyst at Duff Capital Advisors he was involved with portfolio construction, asset allocation and risk analysis/performance attribution for the funds on the Duff Capital Advisors Platform. 
  • As an Analyst at UBS he worked in the mortgage core modeling group to assess error in prepayment models, built analytics and reporting tools for pricing and hedging of complex securities.
  • As a Research Assistant in the MIT Department of Mathematics he developed parallel factorization algorithms for dense linear algebra.
 

Paul Dickson

Paul Dickson

Mr. Dickson is an emerging markets portfolio manager and provides expertise in the areas of emerging market fixed income and foreign exchange investment strategy. Mr. Dickson first came to Wall Street in the early 1990’s as a consultant to Chase Manhattan Bank and helped form the bank’s first emerging markets research group. At that time he was conducting a lecture series at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies on Finance in Emerging Markets. Mr. Dickson holds dual masters degrees in Economics and Latin American Studies from Johns Hopkins and managed the School’s Center of Brazilian Studies. He also holds a degree in Soviet Studies from The George Washington University

 

PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:

 

  • Head of JP Morgan Asset Management’s Emerging Markets Debt group where he managed $6 billion in fixed income and foreign currency funds and was a member of the macro team that oversaw all of the firm’s fixed income portfolios.
  • Senior Sovereign Strategist for Emerging Markets at Lehman Brothers where he won numerous awards for his research.


Butch Andreini , CAIA

Butch AndreiniMr. Andreini is responsible for supporting all activity related to business development and client relations. Prior to joining Armored Wolf, he spent 8 years in similar roles at global macro hedge fund, CRG Partners, and fund of hedge funds, CogoWolf. Mr. Andreini holds the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation and a bachelors degree in Economics from Trinity College (Hartford).


PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Part of 2 person business development team that raised $1.7 billion for the CRG Partners global macro funds.
  • Aided infrastructure build out of CRG Partners hedge fund management firm MMG as it transitioned from boutique money manager with 4 employees and $41 million under management into global institutional asset management firm with 32 employees and over $1 billion under management.
  • Architect and administrator of multiple CRM solutions designed to harvest, organize and prioritize client and prospect communication across multiple departments.
 

Robert Feller
Senior Consultant

 

Robert FellerMr. Feller oversees marketing and investor relations for James Alpha Management which is the exclusive distribution company for Armored Wolf’s expansion into mutual funds and institutional sub-advisory assignments.

 

Mr. Feller holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics and Economics
from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

  • Senior Vice President, Institutional Sales James Alpha Management

  • Prior to his internal transition to James Alpha, Mr. Feller headed up fundraising and business development at Armored Wolf in North America across the family office, Registered Investment Advisor and investment consultancy channels.

  • Previously, he spent 12 years with the Hartford Mutual Funds
    where he served as Western Divisional Manager and contributed to record asset growth for sub-advisors Wellington Management Company and HIMCO (Hartford Investment Management Company).

  • During his tenure, the Hartford Mutual Funds were recognized as the fastest non-proprietary fund complex to reach $50 billion in assets under management.
